Religious Education & Faith Formation at St. Joseph

Saint Peter, our first pope, wrote in one of his letters to our ancestors in the faith: “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen!” (2 Peter 3:18).  This is the reason for our faith formation program at St. Joseph’s!  We believe that a child’s growth in the Lord should be priority number one for all of us.  If you give your child Jesus, you give him/her everything!

We take faith formation seriously at St. Joseph.  But we also believe it should be great fun!  We want our kids to love coming to church, to love learning about their faith–a faith that has been handed down to them by their ancestors all the way back to Jesus. We want them to fall in love with the faith, to keep it all their lives, to cherish it, to live it even now.  That is our goal.  We are blessed to have many wonderful catechists who volunteer of their time and talent to teach our children the right way.

Not every family has the same schedule and not every family wants to pass the faith on in the same way.  We are pleased to offer several different options for faith formation here at St. Joseph’s this year and into the future.  All the options below are designed to help children grow in knowledge and, more importantly, love of the Lord Jesus Christ and his Body the Church.

Please read through the options to discern which is best for your family.  A registration form is provided in the box to the right. You may also register online using our Google form.

Option 1:  Sunday Religious Education

Sunday religious education is for all students through grade 8.  It meets in between the 10:30am Mass in English and the 1:00pm Mass in Spanish.  (Students may attend either Mass but should plan to attend one of them with their families.)  Following 10:30am Mass, students meet their teachers in a pre-determined spot in the church.  We begin together with a prayer in the church and then students go with their teachers to their classrooms.  Classes dismiss at 12:45pm.  Snacks are generally provided.  Parents are always welcome to volunteer in the classroom (please speak with the teacher if you would like to do this), and additionally a Bible Study program will (we hope!) take place for parents who wish while their children are in class in the lower level of the church.  This is a great way for both the parents and their children to grow in the faith together!  Grades 6-8, while they will meet by class as they always have,

Fees: $40 for 1 student; $70 for 2 students; $100 for 3 or more students.  Fees are due by October 1, 2017.  No child is ever denied religious education because of an inability to pay fees.  Please contact Fr. Mike if these fees are a hardship or special arrangements need to be made.  No additional fees are charged for the sacraments.  Sacraments are gifts from God.

Option 2:  Saturday Evenings – Family Faith Formation

Another option for religious formation is the Family Faith Formation program. As the name implies, this program has the family as its main focus. Families enrolled in family formation are asked to come to one Saturday session a month. This session immediately follows Saturday evening Mass (dates below). We share a meal and each family is asked to bring a side dish or dessert while the parish provided the meat.

After the meal, the children are broken into two groups, older and younger, and each has a lesson taught to them by an adult assisted by middle school and high school aged children.  The older group has more of a “youth group feel” to it. The parents and guardians and Fr. Mike will gather to discuss the 4 lessons that the parents will teach at home to their children on a weekly basis.

The lessons are very simple to complete at home even if the adults have no training in teaching. All the materials are provided for families even if there is a craft project. Fr. Mike will discuss the lessons and their topics to help the adults feel more at ease as they discuss the lessons with their children.

The program helps families talk about God with one another and helps to put parents and guardians at the front of their child’s religious education. It helps the families learn and pray together. If a family has a child who will receive First Communion this year, additional lessons and materials are provided for them.  This does not include Confirmation preparation.

Fees: $40 for 1 student; $70 for 2 students; $100 for 3 or more students. Fees are due by October 1, 2017. No one is ever denied religious education because of an inability to pay fees. Please contact Fr. Mike if these fees are a hardship or special arrangements need to be made.

Dates for Option 2 (2017/2018 year):
o September 9
o October 7

o April 17 – 1st Com. Practice 6:30pm
o April 22 – 1st Holy Communion 10:30am
o May 6 – May Crowning During Mass
An email will be sent at least 6 hours in advance if weather is a problem.

Option 3:  Wednesday Evenings

For those whose schedule will not accommodate either option above, you do have the option to participate in the Wednesday evening religious education program at St. Vincent de Paul Parish, also in Shelbyville.  This also includes those preparing for first communion but not Confirmation.  If you choose to attend religious education at St. Vincent, please let Sr. Joan know you are members of St. Joseph.  For more information on their programs you will need to contact Sister directly for dates, times, cost, and any other expectations they might have.  If you have a child in first communion who attends classes at St. Vincent, we do have the expectation that they will still receive first communion at St. Joseph.

RCIC (the Rite of Christian Initiation for Children) is necessary when a child who is older than seven years old is not baptized, or when a child who is beyond the second grade needs to receive First Reconciliation and/or First Holy Communion.

At St. Joseph, RCIC takes place in any of the options above but needs to be marked on the registration form.  (E.g., if you like Option 1 and your child also needs RCIC, then check both boxes on the registration form.)
